BMW Introduces the R 12 NineT and R 12: A Blend of Tradition and Innovation

3 min read

In a nod to its rich heritage, BMW Motorrad has introduced the new BMW R 12 NineT and R 12, classic roadster and cruiser motorcycles that seamlessly blend tradition with innovation. Building on the success of the R NineT launched in 2013, these models aim to continue the legacy with a more classic and purist design, thanks to a new frame concept and an air/oil-cooled boxer engine rooted in the iconic HP 2 Sport from 2007.

The development of the R 12 NineT was guided by “The Spirit of NineT,” emphasizing the archetypal look, timelessness, and high customization qualities that define the R NineT series. In contrast, the R 12 embraces “The Spirit of Easy,” positioning itself as a classic cruiser for relaxed biking.

These classic roadsters and cruisers offer riders unparalleled freedom of choice in design, model diversity, and customization. The combination of the authentic boxer engine, design language inspired by traditional motorcycle eras, innovative technology, and a modular concept ensures riders can tailor their bikes to their preferences.

The authentic and robust boxer engine takes center stage, featuring a redesigned airbox and twin-flow rear silencer. The air/oil-cooled engine, a hallmark of BMW motorcycles for a century, delivers 80 kW (109 hp) at 7,000 rpm in the R 12 NineT and 70 kW (95 hp) at 6,500 rpm in the R 12. The integration of the airbox under the seat and the distinctive “Twin Pipe” exhaust system with reverse cone design cater to the desires of both roadster and cruiser enthusiasts.

A significant departure comes in the form of a one-piece tubular bridge steel spaceframe, eliminating the need for previous fastenings and offering a cleaner, more classic appearance. The rear frame, also made of tubular steel, is bolted to the main frame.

In terms of instrumentation, the R 12 NineT features classic round instruments, a USB-C port, and a 12V socket, with the option for a digital display. The R 12, with its classic cruiser design, emphasizes a relaxed seating position, low seat height, and wide handlebars.

Both models are available in three attractive color options, allowing riders to make stylish appearances as classic roadsters and cruisers. The R 12 NineT offers base paint finishes in Blackstorm metallic, with surcharge colors including San Remo Green metallic and Option 719 “Aluminium” in brushed aluminum/Night Black solid paint. The R 12 boasts base paint finishes in Blackstorm metallic, surcharge colors in Aventurine Red metallic, and Option 719 “Thorium” in Avus Silver metallic.

The highlights of the R 12 NineT and R 12 include their classic, purist design, beefy air/oil-cooled 2-cylinder boxer engine, meticulous workmanship, and a focus on customization. With features like upside-down telescopic forks, radially mounted 4-piston monobloc brake calipers, and a range of customization options through genuine BMW Motorrad accessories, these models promise a thrilling and tailored riding experience.

BMW enthusiasts and motorcycle aficionados alike eagerly anticipate the arrival of these classic roadsters, as BMW continues to uphold its commitment to bridging the gap between tradition and innovation.
