McLaren Enters Electric Bike Market with High-Performance Mountain Bikes

2 min read

Luxury supercar manufacturer McLaren Automotive, renowned for its game-changing supercars and hypercars like the McLaren P1TM, has ventured into the electric bike market with the launch of its debut electric mountain bike range. This new line of bikes is inspired by McLaren’s award-winning automotive designs and technology, bringing their extreme performance ethos into the world of two wheels.

The limited-edition range consists of four models: Extreme 600, Extreme 250, Sport 600, and Sport 250. Each bike showcases McLaren’s signature high-performance attributes, including carbon-fibre construction and next-generation electrification. Designed by the same team responsible for the electrified lightweight McLaren Artura hybrid supercar, these bikes promise an authentic McLaren experience.

One of the standout features of these e-bikes is their powerful motor, which enhances the high power-to-weight ratio—a key element in McLaren’s supercars. The e-bikes boast torque figures that exceed the standards of other premium e-bikes, ensuring class-leading performance. Additionally, the McLaren design team has developed an innovative digital display for the bikes, with graphics that mimic those found in their cars’ driver displays. This full-color integrated LCD panel on the handlebars provides telemetry information, including speed, battery life, and range, to ensure maximum rider engagement and user-friendliness.

The flagship McLaren 600 models are particularly notable for their power. They claim the title of the world’s most powerful street-legal electric mountain bike, with a Race mode that delivers up to 852W of peak power and a top speed of 20mph (32kph). The range includes a 29” hardtail version and a full-suspension model with a 29” front wheel, 27.5” rear wheel, 145mm of rear travel, and 160mm of fork travel.

The four models in the range are equipped with advanced drivetrain systems. The Extreme 600W and Extreme 250W feature the SRAM wireless XX Eagle Transmission 12-speed drivetrain, while the Sport 600W and Sport 250W come with the mechanical SRAM GX Eagle 12-speed drivetrain. All models offer multiple power modes selectable via the digital display on the integrated cockpit: Off, Eco, Trail, Sport, and Race.

The McLaren Sport is designed as an all-purpose mountain bike, equally at home on city streets and rugged trails. It features integrated components and a minimalist frame design, epitomizing McLaren’s style. The McLaren Extreme, a full-suspension electric mountain bike, is built for maximum off-road performance, control, and comfort. Both the Sport and Extreme models come with Pirelli tires.
