BMW Expands Electrified Lineup with New 5 Series Sedan Models

2 min read

In a significant move towards electrification, BMW has announced the addition of two new plug-in hybrid models to its iconic 5 Series Sedan lineup. Following the recent launch of the all-electric BMW i5 and the introduction of combustion engine variants equipped with 48-volt mild hybrid technology, the German automaker is further diversifying its offerings.

Scheduled for release in November 2023, the new models, the BMW 530e Sedan and the BMW 550e xDrive Sedan, mark a comprehensive expansion of the 5 Series Sedan range. These plug-in hybrid vehicles aim to provide a blend of performance, efficiency, and sustainability.

The BMW 530e Sedan features a four-cylinder petrol engine combined with BMW’s latest eDrive technology for plug-in hybrids. It boasts a maximum system output of 220 kW/299 hp and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 miles) in just 6.3 seconds. In purely electric mode, it can reach speeds of up to 140 km/h (87 mph) and offers an impressive electric range of 93 to 103 kilometers (54 to 62 miles) according to WLTP.

On the other hand, the BMW 550e xDrive Sedan packs an in-line six-cylinder petrol engine and the latest eDrive tech. With a system output of up to 360 kW/489 hp, it can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 miles) in a mere 4.3 seconds and reaches a maximum speed of 250 km/h (155 mph). In electric mode, it can still achieve speeds of up to 140 km/h (87 mph) and boasts an electric range of 83 to 90 kilometers (49 to 56 miles) per WLTP standards.

One notable innovation in these plug-in hybrid models is the use of patented BMW technology that increases the electric motor’s power output. This technology enhances torque, providing a noticeable boost during acceleration and sprints.

Furthermore, both models focus on efficiency, offering improved aerodynamics to extend their electric range and adaptive recuperation to recover energy during braking and overrun. The lithium-ion high-voltage battery, situated beneath the vehicle, doesn’t compromise trunk space, maintaining a generous storage volume of 520 liters.

With the plug-in hybrid models, BMW is not only aiming to provide environmentally conscious options but also to deliver a blend of driving pleasure and cutting-edge technology. These new offerings promise a driving experience that’s both sustainable and exhilarating.

As we enter an era of increased electrification in the automotive industry, what are your thoughts on BMW’s latest addition to its lineup?
